Industrial Shrink-Wrapping

Shrink-wrapping encloses large units that will not fit — or are not economical to fit — in a crate inside a heat-shrunk film shell. Done properly it keeps dust, rain and spray off; done badly it traps moisture inside. ZG LASHING plans venting and internal supports before applying it.

What is this service?

Industrial shrink-wrapping drapes polyethylene-based film over the cargo and heats it with a propane heat tool so it shrinks tightly to the cargo's form. It is used with support frames, edge protection, ventilation vents and, where needed, VCI-treated film.

Who and which cargo is it for?

  • Large machines that will not fit a crate
  • Boats, vehicles and construction machinery
  • Steel modules and skid-mounted equipment
  • Cargo stored in the open in the port area

Scope of service

  • Protection for sharp edges and protrusions
  • Support frame where needed
  • Film draping, seaming and heat-shrinking
  • Ventilation vents and access doors
  • VCI film option and desiccant

Typical operation stages

  1. 1

    Preparation

The cargo is cleaned; sharp edges and sensitive parts are covered.

  2. 2

    Support

A frame and slope are created where needed so the film does not hold water.

  3. 3

    Draping

Film is laid starting from a perimeter band below the cargo.

  4. 4

    Shrinking

The film is shrunk with controlled heat; seams are welded.

  5. 5

    Venting

Vents and, where needed, access doors are fitted.

  6. 6

    Check

Holes, loose areas and water pockets are checked.

Methods and materials

Polyethylene shrink film

Thickness and UV additive chosen by how long the cargo stays exposed.

VCI shrink film

Film with corrosion inhibitor for metal-surfaced cargo.

Vents

Allow air circulation to reduce condensation inside the film.

Safety and checkpoints

  • Propane heat tools are hot work: permits, extinguishers and a fire watch are required under port and site rules.
  • No heat is applied near fuel tanks, batteries or flammable material.
  • Work-at-height equipment and fall protection are used.

Example scenario

Example scenario (illustrative): for a mobile crane superstructure shipping on a flat rack, the cab and hydraulic areas are first padded with foam, a frame is built on top with a slope so water runs off, it is wrapped in VCI shrink film and vents are fitted on both sides.

Frequently asked questions

Can shrink-wrap replace a crate?

It protects against exposure but is not as strong as a crate against impact and stacking loads. The choice depends on sensitivity, transport conditions and whether stacking is possible.

Does moisture form inside the film?

Without vents and desiccant, condensation can form as temperatures change, so venting and, where needed, VCI are planned for long voyages.
