Industrial Packing

Seaworthy Export Packing

Seaworthy packing is not a single product but a protection system built in layers for the risks cargo will face at sea. ZG LASHING decides which layers are needed from the route, transit time, number of transhipments and the cargo's sensitivity.

What is this service?

Seaworthy packing combines skid, internal securing, barrier foil, VCI, desiccant, outer crate and marking to protect cargo from humidity and condensation, salt air, vibration, shock, stacking loads and handling impacts.

Who and which cargo is it for?

  • Equipment on long routes or with several transhipments
  • Tropical destinations or routes with large temperature swings
  • Cargo that will be stored for long after arrival
  • Spare-part and project-material shipments

Scope of service

  • Route and risk assessment
  • Layer plan: skid, internal securing, barrier, VCI, desiccant, crate
  • Outer structure sized for stacking and handling loads
  • Destination packaging requirements (ISPM 15 etc.)
  • Handling marks and opening instructions

Typical operation stages

  1. 1

    Risk

Route, time, climate, transhipments and storage are assessed.

  2. 2

    Layer plan

The protection layers needed are set per item.

  3. 3

    Base

The cargo is fixed to its skid.

  4. 4

    Barrier

Barrier foil, VCI and desiccant are applied.

  5. 5

    Outer structure

Crate or outer shell is built and marked.

  6. 6

    Documents

Packing list, dimensions/weights and opening instructions are prepared.

Methods and materials

Moisture management

Day-night temperature swings inside containers can cause condensation; barrier foil and desiccant are the core countermeasure.

Mechanical protection

Skid, internal chocking and the outer crate protect against vibration and impact.

Marking

International handling symbols and centre-of-gravity marks help crews who speak other languages handle the cargo correctly.

Safety and checkpoints

  • Pack weight and centre of gravity are shown correctly on the outside.
  • Skid and crate are sized for lifting and stacking loads.
  • If the pack contains dangerous goods, the relevant transport rules apply separately.

Example scenario

Example scenario (illustrative): a layer plan is drawn up for electrical cabinets on a route with two transhipments: skid, corner protection, VCI and barrier foil, calculated desiccant, closed plywood crate and 'this way up / keep dry / do not stack' marks.

Frequently asked questions

Does every shipment need seaworthy packing?

No. Short routes, robust cargo and controlled storage may need simpler packing. The decision comes from a risk assessment.

Does containerised cargo need seaworthy packing?

A container keeps weather out but not condensation inside it. Corrosion-sensitive cargo may still need an internal barrier and desiccant.

Fumigation vs ISPM 15: Treating Cargo or Treating Wood Packaging?

ISPM 15 governs treating and marking wood packaging — pallets, crates, dunnage — used in international trade by an approved method. Treating the cargo or container itself against pests with a gas is a separate fumigation. The two need different documents, methods and authorisations.
