What is this service?
Tarpaulin covering means closing and fastening a waterproof cover, such as PVC-coated polyester, over cargo carried in open units or on deck. Good tarping does more than keep water out: it also controls water pooling, chafing and condensation between cover and cargo.
Who and which cargo is it for?
- Open-top container cargo
- Machinery on flat racks and platforms
- Project cargo carried on deck
- Cargo waiting in the port area
Scope of service
- Tarp sizing and cutting to the cargo form
- Under-protection on sharp edges
- Close-spaced fastening with rope or bungee
- Slope and support to prevent water pooling
- Combined with VCI and desiccant where needed
Typical operation stages
- 1
Measure
Cargo form, protrusions and fastening points are measured.
- 2
Protect
Sharp edges get under-protection; sensitive surfaces are covered.
- 3
Cover
The tarp is laid to enclose the cargo and shed water downward.
- 4
Fasten
Fastenings are spaced to withstand wind load.
- 5
Check
Openings, chafe points and water pockets are checked and photographed.
Methods and materials
PVC-coated polyester tarp
Waterproof and tear-resistant; UV resistance depends on the material grade.
Under-protection
Felt or foam between tarp and cargo to prevent chafe and punctures.
Ventilation
Controlled venting or desiccant where condensation is a risk.
Safety and checkpoints
- Tarping is work at height; platforms or suitable access equipment are used.
- Spreading large tarps may be postponed in strong wind.
- Tarp fastenings must not interfere with the cargo's lashings.
Example scenario
Example scenario (illustrative): for a compressor unit on a flat rack, the tarp is cut to size, the control panel and flanges are first covered with VCI film, then the tarp is fitted and fastened at close intervals along the bottom edge.

Frequently asked questions
Does a tarp protect against corrosion?
It keeps water off but can trap moisture underneath. Corrosion-sensitive cargo needs VCI, desiccant and ventilation planned together.
Can tarps be reused?
Undamaged tarps can be reused, but tears, holes and eyelets must be checked after a sea voyage.
